THE BONDI DIET
It’s something we can’t live without, and why would you want to? It’s amazing. It’s one of the few hedonistic pleasures we’re entitled to. A good meal will send your serotonin levels sky high, but you can also expect a hefty comedown from the naughty stuff. Yes, food is arguably the best drug around. It’s the gravy, baby.
Food is not just necessity, it’s desire. At various levels, we all seek satisfaction. For me, this permeates from our most basic senses; aroma, texture and taste to name a few. I think that’s what drew me in. It was the different feelings I got from eating something delicious; the warm fuzzies, a sleepy contentedness, even that fiery rush from that perfect chilli kick. Something always changes inside you after you eat and you will be a slightly different person after each bite. Meta enough for you?
I’m 32 years old, livin’ life in Bondi, Sydney and have started this food journal – The Gravy. I only realised yesterday, before writing this blurb that I’m also a total walking contradiction. From Monday to Friday, I wake up at 6am, head off to the gym, then have a green smoothie, boiled eggs and for the rest of the day, essentially live on whole fruits and vegetables, with a little meat on the side. How saintly that all sounds. However, come Friday afternoon through to Sunday night, out comes the booze, brioche and bag. This is The Bondi Diet. Balanced diet or bingeing? That’s up to you. But this is how I live, and honestly, it’s pretty ace.
Food is the ultimate side-kick as we stumble through life; celebrating the good times, back-peddling our way out of poorly made decisions and regretting missed opportunities. Through so many birthday dinners, bad dates and solitary shallow thoughts, food is always there. Sometimes it picks us up and consoles us, sometimes it laughs squarely in your face. This is the story of life and food.
